First Harmonised Standard Under the EU AI Act Is Published: EN 18286:2026

The European Commission has published the reference to EN 18286:2026 in the Official Journal of the European Union — the first harmonised standard supporting the EU AI Act. Titled “Artificial intelligence — Quality management system for EU AI Act regulatory purposes”, the standard was developed by CEN and CENELEC and gives providers of high-risk AI systems a clear route to meeting the quality management system requirements of Article 17 of the Act.
Published through Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/2274, the standard carries a presumption of conformity: providers who implement it are presumed to meet the Article 17 requirements it covers. The Commission notes it is the only AI quality management standard with this status.
EN 18286 is mapped to Article 17 and built around the AI system lifecycle rather than the organisation. It is designed to be layered on top of existing international standards — such as ISO/IEC 42001, ISO 9001 or a sectoral QMS like ISO 13485 — rather than replace them, and it explicitly allows providers in regulated sectors to integrate their management systems instead of running separate ones.
For organisations that already run an ISO 9001 or ISO/IEC 42001 system, the message is practical: the quality management foundation they have is the platform the EU’s AI compliance route is built on. Further harmonised standards under the AI Act are expected to follow.
