White House Accord on Super Intelligence: AI Giants Commit to Voluntary Safety Framework
On 29 September 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump met leading AI executives at the White House — including senior figures from Anthropic, Google, Meta, OpenAI, Microsoft and Nvidia — to address AI safety amid intensifying U.S.–China competition.
The companies signed the White House Accord on Super Intelligence, a voluntary framework committing each signatory to four layers of controls and audits:
- Robust internal controls to monitor model capability and alignment during training and deployment, covering cybersecurity, biosecurity and chemical risks;
- An empowered internal team to ensure safeguards operate as intended;
- Partnership with external and independent auditors to assess those safeguards;
- A designated board-level committee overseeing safety teams and evaluations.
Notably, Trump also voiced support for independent AI audits — a shift in posture given earlier dismissals of outside assessments. The accord envisions regular meetings among signatories to set standards, with possible codification into law over time. Full details had not been released at the time of reporting.
For audit and assurance professionals, the signal is clear: independent evaluation of AI systems is moving from a niche debate to a mainstream expectation.
