PCAOB Updates Standard-Setting Agenda After First Public Comment Period

The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board has updated its standard-setting, research, and rulemaking agendas following its first-ever public comment period, the board announced on October 1, 2026. The refreshed agendas reflect stakeholder feedback and set priorities across three tracks. Standard-setting projects will address comfort letter engagements, auditor independence, fraud, noncompliance with laws and regulations, and going concern. Research efforts will focus on data and technology, firm and engagement performance metrics, and communications with audit committees, while a rulemaking project will develop a permanent broker-dealer inspection program. “Feedback from investors, auditors, academics and other stakeholders is critical for the PCAOB to fulfill our mission,” chairman Demetrios “Jim” Logothetis said in a statement. The board issued its request for comment on June 23, also weighing the potential impact of the SEC’s proposal on semiannual reporting; the comment period closed on August 7.
