26 US Attorneys General Urge Congress to Set Federal AI Safety Standards

Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond has joined a coalition of 25 other attorneys general urging the U.S. Congress to establish federal safeguards for artificial intelligence.

In a letter to congressional leaders, the 26-state coalition calls for federal oversight of AI safety testing and performance standards, government-led incident response with public findings, and international cooperation on AI development — while opposing any federal rules that would preempt state AI laws. The letter warns that unchecked AI development could pose risks to financial systems, critical infrastructure, and national security.

“When AI systems are breaking into networks and acting in ways that would be criminal if a person did them, we can no longer afford to wait,” Drummond said.
